Peri-implant disease causes an inflammatory process in the gum surrounding an implant which can result in the loss of supporting bone which can make the implant fall out.

It is a growing problem in implant dentistry and despite our best efforts to refine implant design and surface features the problem persists, and in some cases appears to be growing.

As more and more implants are placed by clinicians of varying skill levels and clinical backgrounds the numbers of patients presenting with the disease seems to be increasing.

Early detection and diagnosis is often key to successful resolution of the problem. Dr Barker’s careful monitoring of implants looks for changes and he may take x-ray to evaluate bone loss.

Peri-implant disease is managed typically with a combination of specialised cleaning, use of antibiotics and Dr Barker would also undertake a thorough examination of the area to ensure there are no other factors contributing to the problem.

If the disease has progressed further and bone loss is evident, initial treatment is the same as above but Dr Barker may also consider whether to attempt to regenerate the bone around the implant.
