Dental implants are the latest innovation to replace a missing tooth or a number of teeth

Dr Christopher Barker

A dental implant is an artificial titanium rod which is placed directly into the jaw bone and acts as a substitute for the root segment of the natural tooth.

The implant is made using titanium which allows new bone cells to grow around it. A process, called ‘Osseointegration’, allows the implant to integrate with the newly formed bone which securely locks it into place. An artificial tooth (a crown) is then placed on top of the implant to replace the missing tooth.

The placement of most implants is a minor surgical procedure which results in some localised pain and discomfort which can be managed by pain medication.

Most patients are able to proceed with everyday life and work often by the next day and continue normal life throughout the months in between specialist appointments.

At Proactive Perio we can complete the following implant procedures:

  • Single tooth replacement

Some people do not have adequate healthy natural bone to support dental implants.  Certain procedures (called ‘bone augmentation’) can be undertaken to supplement the natural bone so an implant can be placed.

It is essential that implants are checked regularly to ensure that the implant and surrounding teeth are functioning correctly and there is no sign of failure.

Peri-implant disease causes an inflammatory process in the gum surrounding an implant which can result in the loss of supporting bone which can make the implant fall out.
